I have a Windows 2k Server Domain with Active Directory. I also have a couple of DNS servers set up. I seem to be having a problem with a laptop (IBM Thinkpad) that is running Windows XP Pro. All my other workstations (12-15 of them) are running Windows 2k.

The laptop running Win XP has been doing some strange things. First, when I try to connect to a shared network drive I get an hourglass for about 20-30 seconds before the drive show. Once I'm in the shared drive everything works fast and fine. If I switch to viewing a different share I'll get the hourglass again. This is a very annoying problem.

The other strange thing has only happened twice, but it took me a bit to figure out how to get out of it. All of a sudden I can't seem to log into my domain. I get two different responses. One of the responses says something about a time problem between the workstation and the network. The other response says that it can't find the domain server. I fixed the problem both times by logging into the laptop as the local administrator, removing it from the domain, and then rejoining the domain. Why the heck has that happened...twice! I don't have issues with any other workstations on my network.

Please help,

Darryl

Just for jollies, throw a hosts file on the xp machine pointing to the server where the shared drive is and see what happens.

Assuming this works, what will it prove?

I would say this points towards name resolution with the dns servers. Just one of the simple things I try. I'm guessing you already did an ipconfig /all on the xp machine and a w2k machine and compared them, then tracert to the servers to start your testing. Just a thought.

well since iam new here...this might sound stupid.how about if there is an audit to that account and that is why it takes too much????another thing did u said to ur dhcp to register all clients???

I'm not sure how to check on the audit issue. I'm assuming you don't want the audit option on. If that's the case, please tell me how to do that. Also, the DHCP server is on my firewall box (I have a SonicWall). Is the "register all clients" option supposed to be on the server or the client side? And, is it better to have that option on, or off?
