recently got a WDC Protege 15gb set to UDMA33.I had XP Pro running no probs on a 6.4gbNTFS.I used drive image v5.0 to do a disk copy so i could use the better and larger hard drive. When XP trys toboot up with the new drive the system says cannot find autochk and blue screens saying session manager failed and switchs the system off.So i thought no problem i'll re-insert the 6.4gb and keep using that for now until i find out what went wrong.BUT the same error occurs on the 6.4gb.How has the destination and the source go the same ERROR!!!!! when it was fine.
I then virus checked the MBR still no joy.
When i try to re-install XP it says it cannot find a valid volume?. IT is not accessible. Then i installed a fresh copy of XP on the 15GB and set the 6.4GB as a slave.
When XP boots up it can see the 6.4gb but no drive letter is assigned. Disk management tells me that the 6.4 is NTFS MBR and 3.5gb is being used but it won't let me assign a letter as there is no letter in the first place..so ALL my data is still on the drive!!!!.How do I repair the error and assign it a drive letter so i can get to my WORK.When in fdisk the primary new install is recongnised as NTFS(15gb) but the slave is a NON-DOS partion!!!!.
PLEASE i really need some advice on this as it contains my work and e-mail contacts....
My fault for not backing it up..but there shouldn't have been a problem.

This sounds like another horror story brought about by using aftermarket HDD utilities.

Sorry,,,,,, but I have read seen too many examples of these kinds of MAJOR problems when people use NON - Microsoft software to set up / and copy hard drives.
** The results are NOT reliable **

If your think my eyes are brown,,,, I have one suggestion:
Come back and read this forum for 1-year (to give you a little bit of experience), and then see what you think.

* The only way I would use one of these utilities, is having the LATEST VERSION,,,, like Partition Magic, or GHOST, and version 2002 ----- or version 7 (whatever). But the latest only.
