WinXP, IIS, OSCommerce 2.2 Milestone2

I get this message no mater what I do:
Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

I am running IIS5.1 which came with WinXP Pro. I have installed MySQL 5.1 and PHP 4.4; I setup a new schema in MySQL called oscommerce and ran phpMyAdmin as recommended.

Stumped, any assistance appreciated.
