my friend has a computer that was prviously 2 operating systems...win 95 and win 98SE...it needs to be reformated to because it won't boot up properly...when windows 98SE was put on it, they had a DSL input installed...the drivers were also installed...if i reformat the computer and put windows xp pro on it, will i have to reinstall the drivers or will the windows xp pro setup automatically do this????

That depends on whether XP contains the drivers for the network card or not. Probably it will but I would find the drivers and have them handy just in case.

Also if it had Windows 95 and 98 I'd be hard pressed to believe its is in any way capable of handling XP.

That is to say I don't think XP will run on it, or very slowly and most likely unusable if it does.

Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

i know i thought it would also be incapable but he says it has over 64 megabytes of ram so i told him that i would try it...and if it doesn't work...i have a windows 95 and 98 se handy.:)

Minimal requirements said:
233 MHz CPU * [blue]I'm really not sure how XP will behave at such speeds. [/blue]
64 MB of RAM [red](may limit performance and some features) [/red]*
1.5 GB of available hard disk space *
Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
Still if you can get it to install and run I guess its o.k.

I would try Windows 2000 if you want something closer to XP than 98 or 95 without the extra strain XP will put on the system.

Windows 2000 Professional system requirements
• 133 MHz or more Pentium microprocessor (or equivalent). Windows 2000 Professional supports up to two processors on a single computer.
• 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended minimum. 32 MB of RAM is the minimum supported. 4 gigabytes (GB) of RAM is the maximum.
• A 2 GB hard disk that has 650 MB of free space. If you are installing over a network, more free hard disk space is required.
• VGA or higher-resolution monitor.
• Keyboard.
• Mouse or compatible pointing device (optional).

I've got to say that the machine in question would be much happier running Windows 98se rather than XP.

The machine must be over 10 years old (probably more) and there have been a lot of advances in computing since it was manufactured.

My advice is get a newer machine, brand new if affordable, or even one that is 4 or 5 years old and secondhand but able to handle XP.

Look into off-lease stuff. 3 year old dell stuff with P4 1.5ghz & up, 512 mb, 30gb, and XPP are selling at around $200.
Granted that you will really need a XPP CD at some point but for reinstall you can use a borrowed one.
Computer hardware depreciates faster than cars. You can do well letting somebody else pay the "drive off the lot" fee.
