I have just installed a second DVD-RW drive in my computer. This one is a Sony DWU14A. It is supposed to work with all media. I am having the same problem with this drive as I did with the NEC 2500 I installed first. Both drives will play DVD's. When I insert either a DVD+RW or DVD-RW disc in the drive, Windows sees the drive as a CD not as a DVD. Pop the disc out and Windows thinks it's a DVD again. What gives? If I try an burn to a disc Windows says that there is no disc in the drive.

TIA

Roxio 5 is not compatible with DVD media. You must have version 6 or higher. Did you try the burning software that came with the drive?

These were both OEM drives that came with no software. Can you recommed a software package that has a trial version so I can prove this out before spencding money. I still wonder why Windows XP does not recognize the media. That would seem to be a prerequsite to all of this.

Having used both Roxio Easy CD/DVD 6 and Nero 6 Ultra Edition, I recommend Nero's package. There should be a demo available out on their site:

Nero 6 Ultra is the way to go. Nero will install the proper drivers necessary to read and write to your rw discs, cd-rw and dvd-rw, so go ahead and get nero, you wont go wrong.

See if there's are any firmware updates for these drives in addition to getting the burning software.
