WinXP DNS problem.

One of the computers on a network of mine will not resolve any dns names or even resolve an ip from a dhcp server. I have set up a static ip for the computer but all i can do is ping ip address's on both LAN and the WAN. i cannot even view a website thats hosted within the LAN. or connect to the ftp servere thats on the network. the tcp/ip settings are the same as the other computers on the network. this is the only XP system on the network but was working fine. the last person to use the computer was trying to set up the file print sharing and clicked the "Set up a home or small network" and after that it stoped working. i have even replaced the network card and re-setup all the network settings with no luck. i've ran out of ideas so i'm looking for anything that anyone can think of that might work.

The guess it could be the node type but i've never had this kind of problem before and i'm somewhat new to xp. i still use ME, and i'm more of a linux person.. so..

the primary dns suffix for the non-working xp box is now the same as the working one.. i tried that out of trial and error.. but i knew that wasnt going to work.. and so it didnt. i was wondering how i change the node type to see if that works..

So if you enable "obtain an IP address automaticly", the DHCP server fails to populate the IP, Gateway and DNS entries? If that is true than using static IP, Gateway and DNS entries are unlikely to help as you discovered.

Try this first, and after a reboot reset the adapter's TCP/IP configuration for DHCP automatic addressing and report back:

Device Manager, View, Show all hidden devices, see if there are any devices showing under Network adapters other than the mini-ports and the actual adapter. If so, remove them.

Also, did you recently remove Norton Antivirus?

only thing that shows up besides the miniports and nic is the 1394 Net Adapter. thats always been their. dont know what it's for but i uninstalled it and the nic and rebooted so it could rebuild the drivers but still no luck. and no norton software is installed or ever was. only has mcafee VS.

Are both the DHCP service and DNS service set to automatic, and started on the XP box?

yep, first thing i checked when it wouldnt find the dhcp

If you can:

ping 127.0.0.1
ping the DHCP server
ping the two DNS entries
ping another random workstation

The DNS and DHCP services are started
A WINS entry is made for the device
Under Internet Options, there are no Proxy Servers defined

Client for Microsoft Networking, File and Printer Sharing installed
Netbios over TCP/IP enabled under TCP/IP Properties
The HOSTS file on the machine has no spurious entries
LMHOSTS disabled

You rebuilt your Winsock service stacks with the utility

Set the adapter properties, Configure, Advanced, to a fixed speed and duplex. 100-Full if to a switch, 10-Half duplex if to a hub. Do not use "Auto"

I am bothered a bit not having a single DNS entry at the workstation pointing only to a local DNS server. See:

Note this is especially true of XP.

But I would do an in-place reinstallation at this point.
