Hello,

Sorry if i've posted this in the wrong forum, but I'm new here and was unsure of where the content fitted in.

I am trying to set up a small fileserver with certain permissions for around 10 users (Win XP and Win2000). The fileserver is NOT part of the domain xxx.domain (used for work laptops only). Work will not allow this new fileserver to join the domain as it is not managed by them, but by the current project team. Our laptops cannot be removed from the domain either.

The process in the past has been for users to use the Map Network drive feature to map to the 'fileserver' and access a shared drive.

I would like some tighter control over access rights and permissions, and was wondering if there was any other way to create a better network between the domain and non-domain computers, as well as setting up proper permissions. What other options are available to me?

Thanks.

Tighter controls, just use a long ruler and smack the user on the hands if they go to the wrong area and have them beg for permissions...... Well, I was trying to be funny. That answer is as valuable as any from me on this subject as I don't know Windows. This forum is for Extreme networking gear. Select a Windows related forum from the forum list.
