I have a user that continually gets GPF's the following error message.
"winword caused a general protection fault in module GDI.EXE" then a register dump. The following actions have been taken.

1. Replaced hard drive and reinstalled Win98
2. Replaced RAM chips
3. Replaced Video Card
4. Swapped hard drive into new machine and reconfigured with new everthing.
5. Ensured msword was updated to SR-2
6. Checked for viruses with updated def files
7. swore and kicked, yelled and threatened.
8. drank heavily to forget

No fix yet. Any ideas.
Since the yelling & kicking didn't work (which I too would have suggested) go into the evil PC's Windows Explorer. Search for normal*.*
Your looking for the normal.dot
Once found, delete it. (If found in more than one location - delete all)

This very small template may just be the source of all your users' GPF errors.

Also to consider - if the user may have an older Novell Client? MS Word doesn't like some of the older 2.X clients.

Hope this helps ya out!
