winsxs folder, 10gig? 1

I did fresh install of vista, Office2k7, all latest vista updates inc. SP1.
I have a folder called winsxs under the windows folder, its thousands of folders and files and is 6 gig.
Theres also another folder in there that has another 5gig but havent nailed it yet.
Whats with this folder?
I have also googled/yahooed and found others with same problem.
How do I clean this up? Can I clean it up?
Its on at least 3 pcs that I know of.

Basically it's where all the patches and service pack will backup all the files which have been upgraded to it.
