WinSPM strange issue

I have a Merlin Magix and we use WinSPM to administer it. I'm wondering if anyone of you guys have seen an issue like this with the SPM software. I built a new machine and loaded SPM all the way to 8.0 from ver.5.

Now I can connect up just fine with it using the direct connect and com port 3 @ 2400 baud. but the problem comes in whenever I try to disconnect SPM. The machine will freeze and then just reboot. I'm able to click on the red (Quit) button in software just fine, this problem just happens right after clicking on the Disconnect button on the left side of the window in the menus. Any Ideas or thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

Sounds like some files got corrupted. I would try a fresh version.

I'm curious if you're using a USB port to communicate with WinSPM. If so, your problem may have to do with your USB/DB9 adapter and not the WinSPM software.

I have a nice copy of WinSPM release 9.0 which installs the software from scratch without all the nonsense upgrades. I'm only happy to accomodate your request for this software as Avaya only offers a series of updates.

Dagwood, you are correct- I am using the USB port, a USB to DB9 which requires a driver to be load to funtion. below is the link to the cable. What are your thoughts on why this is happening using the USB port. Would playing with the com port settings maybe be the ticket to get it to work correct, stop bits, hardware flow control, any ideas? Thanks

WinSPM will NOT work very well - or at all with most USB to serial converters. It likes a real 9-pin male serial port - like on older laptops and PC's.

I will concur with Tom. I went through that stage of attempting to connect to systems without a real serial port.
It just isn't reliable(and usually doesn't work) at all. You should only use it on a machine with a real 9 or 25 pin physical serial port.

The Business class Dell machines (630)DO have real serial ports on them.

Everything that I've read about SPM is right on with what you guys have said. I've upgraded to a fresh 9.0 version of SPM hoping that would help, It didn't. Unfortunately there is only 1 DB9 on the back of the HP D5100 i have built for this and it is in use, maybe I'll try to swap to see if that will help. Maybe the CAS software can handle the USB better. Thanks again for the help.

Why don't you obtain an additional serial port board and install it for WinSPM or CAS usage, assuming you have a spare PCI slot in your cabinet???

Troubleshooting the USB port can be a PITA, and we could use an iron mountain's worth of oxide by posting back and forth about Event Viewer errors and such. Win95 and it's predecessor had lousy USB support, but that pretty much went away with XP. Still, what you're experiencing isn't all that uncommon. I honestly don't know why an old-fashioned serial connection is so difficult to emulate.

I like your idea of swapping the call-monitoring port with the programming port. Something about the way you worded your last post leads me to believe that this is a dedicated PC. If so, you don't have to ever close WinSPM, right? It seems like a silly point, but the truth is that if you never close WinSPM, you'll never get the crash/lockup.

If you ever have the luxury of purchasing another USB-to-serial adapter, may I recommend the Belkin F5U109? I have never, ever had a single issue with this device and I have used it with different machines over the years. That particular model of adapter is no longer made, but is readily available online from all kinds of places. Alternatively, Belkin has an F5U409-CU which I believe is the product's successor.
