I've had a problem with my laptop for the last couple of weeks. Whenever I have to backup a Definity or Index phone system via ftp or ftp some new firmware onto a system, the ftp process fails saying "session closed by peer"

If I run the winsockfix program, reboot my laptop and then try to take a backup or ftp some firmware, it will work. I then jump in my car head to the next site and try again, but I get the same problem, so I run the winsock fix program and I will then be able to carry on.

Also if I telnet into anything, my connection will be lost if I don't continually talk to the system. After the winsockfix has been run, telnet keeps it's connection and doesn't drop.

Can anybody tell me whats wrong with my laptop, that I need to continually run the winsockfix program to get ftp/telnet to work??

Web browsing and email access all work ok, sophos can't find anything suspicious and neither can AVG Anti-Spyware. My laptop is a HP Compaq NC6220, WinXP SP2.

Many thanks

have u tried to create a pool of connections from the server? your server is closing you socket in the server side.

It is not necessarily an error. It all depends on your server protocol. by rebooting ur creating a new session, ull have to talk to the server side and see if they can sort it for u

Thanks for the reply HalComps - but what do you mean by the server side??

With regards to backing up a system, I have MS IIS installed on my laptop and I use the ftp server in IIS to act as the ftp server. I then point my definity server to the ip address of my laptop when I run a backup.

As for upload firmware, I use the ftp client from the command prompt to do this.

For telnet I can use telnet from the command prompt or Procomm or Avaya ASA, all of which connect but the disconnect after 30 seconds if I don't press any keys.

If I run the winsockfix program and then reboot everything works fine.

I/m 100% sure this is down to my laptop but I just don't know how to fix it.

Many thanks

r u clearing the previous sessions b4 ur starting a new one? as by rebooting ur clearing the session and creating a new.

First, I would not run the WINSOCKFIX program anymore, it has issues with SP2, and is not needed as there is a build in fix, at the command prompt (or Run Box) type: netsh winsock reset catalog

this will reset the winsock catalog, then I would do a thurough anti-malware scan (using more than just one, ie. AdAware and Spybot, back them up with AVG AntiMalware (former Evido), and an Antivirus scan to top it off) just to be sure...

Ben

What does the netsh winsock reset catalog do??

Will it remove my networking setup ie, domain membership, dialup networking connections etc.

Thanks

Also, You might want to consider dowloading & running Grisoft's Anti-rootkit (free download). Lavasoft's Adaware 2007 now includes rootkit as well as spyware removal tools.

Thanx HalComps and especially Linney, you guys beat me to it...

OK ran the netsh utility and ran several system scans using Spybot, Ad-aware, AVG Anti-spyware and Sophos anti-virus.

Spybot picked up the Virtumonde and cleaned.

Do you think this could have been causing all my problems?
