Hey,

Im getting an error in a few apps (email, internet access) that are running on Win98. The problem seems to be with TCP/IP or Winsock, I know they are related but not sure how.....
If I try and send mail from this PC with an account thats on the server, I get an error saying error sending mail due to a TCP/IP problem. Before all this, I couldn't even enter the ping command without getting an error, saying it was missing wsock.dll which was renamed by the Sircam Virus I presume (which was cleaned off). So I uninstalled TCP/IP and networking completely and it restored the files, and now I can ping, but I get an error saying "Error Code 10091" which on the MS website says its got to do with the winsock 2 update, but thats only applicable for win95 right????? How can I reinstall winsock for win98, I think if I can do this it will solve the problem.....??? Jay~

Try extracting winsock.dll through system file checker. Check to make sure you have your cab files (win98 should have 55 in total, #'s 22 thru 69). Note the location, and go to start, run, sfc, ok. Select 'extract one file from installation disk', and type in the corrosponding file. In the restore from field, obviously put the location of the cabs, and if you dont have them on your computer, use the win98 cdrom. Put c:\windows\system for the 'save file in'. When or if it asks to back up a file, click skip. No need to reinstall winsock, just extract it. I hope this helped s-) clgx299@earthlink.net
I came, I saw, I connected at 48.8...

OH!! and remember, when reinstalling tcp/ip, you want to always always ALWAYS rename the .386 files (vip.386, vtcp.386, vdhcp.386, vtdi.386, vnbt.386) these files could be corrupted and causing the problem. But DO NOT delete them :) just as a follow-up. Good luck!

Wish I could be more encouraging, but I recommend reformat and reinstall. No telling what problems you'll run into tomorrow and then the next day.

You've been compromised, dude. Take it like a man.

no need to format and reinstall. You can have more problems reinstalling than you can with extracting. clgx299@earthlink.net

Hi, Using W98SE & connect using a DUN monitor. For some months I've noticed long time delays waiting for response from IE requesting data and same again for receiving data - sometimes I need to click again as nothing is happening. Delay is in order of 15-30 seconds - maybe more. This happens most of the time - every connection - it never goes away enough to make surfing fun. More recently very poor connection speeds down from 48000 to 28800 or less. - Still with coms delays. Tried to reinstall winsock, TCP/IP networking .. all to no avail. Tried different ISP's - just same. Tried different modems - same! Had line checked by Telco. I've even tried new install of W98 - same! Though will try again. Any clues? Using USR extrenal dial up modem - used to work great - also internal HCF modem - also used to work great. Apart from this PC seems to work fine.
Have ZoneAlarm (latest version) running, and all latest updates for IE5.5 - What else?
Currently looking to upgrade PC from Celery 300A @450Mhz to AMD 1.4G and/or ISDN - cos I'm cheesed off! :-(

clear the cache of your Temp Internet files, these can cause the internet connection to be slow..... Jay~

My new Tae Kwon Do website is up and running!!
