WINS Server on Samba Server - Winbind required? 1

Is it necessary to run winbind to use a standalone workgroup samba server as a WINS server?

I use a 2.2.7a samba server with no winbind as a WINS server with the following parameter in the [global] section of the smb.conf file:

wins support = yes

Thanks - that's what I have configured also. But somewhere along the way winbindd started up. I'd like to get rid of it if possible, if I don't need it.
