WINS problem

Hi all,

New to Linux here, and just testing it out. Setup a Redhat 8.0 machine. Got it on my network fine, but I can only ping by IP address. Can't seem to get WINS working at all.

Can someone give me some info on configuring the machine to see my WINS server on the network, and use it!.

Okay,
You realize that WINS means "windows internet naming service",
or some facsimile thereof, right?
Why would linux use a windows specific name scheme without
modification?
Without installing samba, configuring samba and configuring
samba to use wins, your linux machine will never use wins
and will not be accessible.
Either install samba or use an internal dns server.

Sorry marsd,

I should have mentioned that I have installed samba! I have looked at the smb.conf file under /etc/samba and have specified the IP address of my WINS server. But I still cannot ping through netbios name.

Is there something else I should be adding to get it to work?

Yep..
In your global config section in smb.conf:
wins server = address of wins server ,
and send a kill -hup to smbd/nmbd.

If you have done this as you say, then dump your settings
with testparm and see what settings you have.

That should do it if I remember correctly.
On the obvious side make sure you are in the correct workgroup/domain...
