Hi,
When running a capture i seem to get an inordinate amount of "WINS No Response" reported in the expert. I know the WINS servers are functioning correctly. Also in the object field it always appears as 11.21.13.125 11.21.255.255.
Im guessing that its broadcast traffic that can be ignored. Can someone help me out with and idea of whats going on ?
Thanks

(Spence, the order is on the way:) Accounts have sent it to your old address in Windsor

Greetings,

You are correct, these messages are red herrings, since true wins commands would have been addressed to a true wins server.

I mention this along with other information on my website @

Wins no response is a symptom that is given when the sniffer does not see a response from the wins server. This can be caused by many things, but the most usual is when the sniffer is on a switch port and is only seeing broadcast traffic. In this scenario the wins request goes out at a broadcast but the response is a unicast message by the wins server back to the client. The good news is that the the way a client initiates communications with a wins server can be modified from broadcast to unicast.

Thanks, I'll ignore them for now.

Dave

How does one modify their WINS clients to use unicast instead of broadcast?
