I have a whole bunch of folders exported via Samba. WinNT "sees" all of them but when I try to open some of them I get a message saying the resource doesn't exist.

I've noticed that the folders with only one upper-case letter at the beginning e.g. Backgrounds1 open fine but those with multiple upper-case e.g. ColourCamera1 won't open. Is this some kind of restriction in Samba or maybe WinNT's sending the wrong name?

John Connolly

In linux, capitalization counts. In windows, it doesn't matter. For example in windows Temp = TeMP, but in linux they are two different animals. This may be the source of your problem. I am not sure if samba takes care of this. Come to think of it, on my system, linux with win98, I have not had this problem, then again win98 has no security.

Try accessing the folders via a command prompt and make sure you use proper capitalization.

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

Does the user you are browsing network neighbourhood with have permissions to access the file in samba.conf? IIRC, any user can browse the available resources on a Lan Manager network. However, if you don't have permission to access the resource you will get the message you are seeing.

--
Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried exporting the "ColourCamera1" folder as "CC1" and can open it fine so it looks like a length thing (or maybe length plus multiple uppercase). Need to try some more combinations...

John Connolly
