im a non winnt guy but i have a need to backup the users that are on a winnt4 machine.
if the hard drive goes, the data is worthless anyway. All i care about is the users and passwords assigned to that machine.
Ive experimented with using the sam file in the c:\winnt\system32\config directory.
I created a machine, backed up that directory and then formated to start over. When i replace the files with the back up i cannot login at all. Am i going about it the wrong way? Is it so easy that im missing it?
thanx for your help
Larry

You are getting problems cos the SID (Security Identifiers) are different. The fastest and easiest way is to stick another server up as a BDC. Two machines sharing the info. No need to back it up cos you have redundancy. No downtime either... and it helps load balance the logging in.
