This seems to be a related subject, I couldn't find a specific forum for Wingate.

We are using Wingate 6.1 proxy server installed on an XP workstation. The internet connects fine through the proxy. However, our off site email provider will not connect through the proxy. They will connect directly by bypassing the proxy though. In wingate I have enabled the SMTP and POP3 support, and configured both to our email provider's IP. Both use port 25 and 110 respectively. The Wingate firewall is disabled as are our XP firewalls. We have McAfee 8.x with ePO and the port blocking is disabled (removed). The LAN is 2003 and AD. No policies are in effect that would cause this problem.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks and best regards,
David.

Exactly-nothing!

We use the Netscape email program. When configured for our proxy it starts up with the lower portion of the email window containing a view of netscape.com and the password dialog should be presented in the upper portion of the window. If the password dialog is not presented the email has failed to connect. When I configure Netscape for a direct connection, all is well.

Our email provider says the problem is with the proxy firewall. It is disabled. The XP firewall is disabled. There are no error messages, and a search of the Wingate logs has revealed nothing. The Wingate proxy provides connections for the internet with no problems, just not our email provider. If I configure the workstation to use a different proxy server (not ours), all is well. So I know there is not a problem with Netscape, not a problem with our email provider, and no problems with our internet connection to the world, just the one through Wingate.

Thanks for your interest Serbtastic, I hope we can come up with something, I'm all out of ideas.

David.

More background:

About two weeks ago the Wingate 5.3 proxy server that had been running along okay for a couple of years just croaked. I found a dead ethernet port on the mother board and it was under warranty so it was send back to the manufacturer to be repaired.

In the mean time, I found an extra XP workstation, installed the Wingate 6.1 software, and configured the whole mess to be our replacement proxy server. This is where the problems begin.
