Windows XP with 96MB RAM

Can Windows XP run on an AMD 500mhz and 96MB RAM computer? The computer will only be used for Microsoft Office Applications and Internet Explorer.

The "official" minimum RAM is 128 mb. For Office applications even that is too little for effective use of the applications.

I would think that might be very slow.
I had a customer whose pc was supposed to have 128Mb. One side of the memory had broken, so she only had 64Mb. XP was incredibly slow, constant disc activity, windows taking 10 to 20 secs to appear. Swapped the memory for a good one, and it was quite acceptable. AMD 1Ghz I think.

No, stick with 98 SE or 2000.

Windows XP only runs well on Pentium 3/AMD Athlon 1GHz or above, with 192MB of RAM, and 5GB of free Hard Drive Space.

I tried it on an old Athlon 700MHz, with 128MB of RAM and a 8GB Hard Drive, and it ran so slowly I had to put 98 SE back on it.

I've loaded XP on a machine with a 266 pentium 2 and 64 megs of ram. It was a little slow but worked just fine. Some of the newer resource intensive apps might not like it as well as a lot of the new games out there. But if you just want to surf the net and send emails you'll be fine.

But Office takes a lot of RAM especially if a few apps are open at a time, so for XP and Office, 192MB is minimum

XP on a Celeron 300, 256Mb, 7,200 hard drive and Radeon 7000 AGP is ok. Not quick but useable and very, very stable.

Minimising any open apps you are not using maximises the available RAM.

I have a friend of mine who is using the process as you have with XP but with 128 mb ram and I can tell you it will be very slow. You can run it and use it but you will notice a significant change of speed in using your programs. If I were you I will stick to win98.
