Hi

I have this problem that can't seem to be solved.
A bit of history, few days ago my Windows XP complained that it could not find taskmgr.exe at this folder, C:\DOCUME~1\NURFIT~1\. In a rush to solve the problem, I copied the taskmgr.exe from system32 and copied to C:\DOCUME~1\NURFIT~1\.

Now every time I start/re-boot my PC, the taskmgr will startup automatically. I have try to disable it via msconfig and even look in the Startup folder for it but no luck, taskmgr was not found in both of these locations.

Below is my HijackThis log, please advice me on the next course of remedy. Thank you.

Have you tried to remove it from this folder C:\DOCUME~1\NURFIT~1\? And see what happens?

Life is a big Roleplaying adventure.

Wayne

Yes, can't do it in normal mode. So I delete it in safe mode.
After restarting, the original problem returns, that is, Windows XP complained that it could not find taskmgr.exe at this folder, C:\DOCUME~1\NURFIT~1\.

What could be the problem?
I have scan with Ad-aware and Spybot and have removed some of the issues found but to not avail.

To my knowledge the only location it should be is in system32. Ive never heard of it being located in a user folder.

Also delete this on your log

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Load in safe mode, run all your antivirus and anti spyware programs and then run this registry cleaner.

Also, empty out all temp folders.

c, documents and settings, username, local settings, temp(delete everything inside this folder that you can)

there will be a folder for each user on the computer, empty them all

other temp folder is

c, windows or winnt, then temp, delete everything you can in there.

Let us know if that takes care of it or not.

I've been puzzling over this for a while now, because I can't see anything obvious in the Hijack This log that would explain what's trying to run C:\DOCUME~1\NURFIT~1\taskmgr.exe.

Here are some thoughts in case
electronicfreak's very good suggestions don't work.

Firstly, as an aside, I assume your username starts with nurfit, which would make C:\DOCUME~1\NURFIT~1 the short-filename version of your profile path.

Secondly, you could try installing Process Explorer if you don't already have it. It's by sysinternals which is now part of Microsoft ([link]www.sysinternals.com[/url] redirects to Microsoft's site).

When you install it, make sure you tell it NOT to replace the Windows Task Manager. If that option isn't in the setup routine, you will find it on the Options menu once you have launched the product. Put it in your startup folder.

Then delete the C:\DOCUME~1\NURFIT~1\taskmgr.exe file and reboot. When you get the error saying C:\DOCUME~1\NURFIT~1\taskmgr.exe cannot be found, leave it on screen. Go to Process Explorer and use the "Find Window's Process" button (a target icon, to the right of the binoculars). Click and hold the button, move the mouse over the error message and release the button. Process Explorer should reappear and the highlighted process should be the one that is trying to call C:\DOCUME~1\NURFIT~1\taskmgr.exe.

Run AVG Anti-Spyware!

as it may interfere with the scanning process:
# Launch AVG Anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.

"Complete System Scan".
# AVG will now begin the scanning process. Be patient this may take a little

Memory
startup folders
Registry
system folders
services

Choose drive , all drives and, click scan all files
and then click scan/clean. After it finishes scanning and cleaning post
the log here with a new hijack this log.

Note: this is a very thorough scanner, it might take anything up to an hour
or more, depending on how many drives you have and how badly infected your
pc is.

Highlight the portion of the scan that lists infected items and hold
CTRL + C to Copy then paste it here. The whole log with be extremely
big so there is no way to copy the whole thing. I just need the
infected items list.

Post a new hijack this, the Mwav scan log and the AVg antispware log!
