. find the SP2 update on CD. You are allowed to borrow a friends, many computer shops have bins of them, and you can order them and they should arrive in very short order:
It has been the experience of enough that it is better to use the CD than the Windows Update Service if possible.

. Prior to upgrading, make certain you system is clean of any malware. Faq608-4650 advises as to manual methods, the trialware of Giant AntiSpyware if updated prior to a scan is a quick and easy check:
. Prior to upgrade, make certain there are no Virus or worm issues. Update and completely scan with your antivirus software

. If there are any longstanding hardware issues, resolve them by posting back to the Forum for help. XP SP2 makes a very lousy hardware repair mechanism; Check your Event Viewer logs for persistent issues.

. Finally, prior to the SP2 installation, make certain you have installed the lastest and greatest device drivers for:

. any non-IDE hard disk device
. any network adapter
. any scanner
. any card read or other unusual USB Device
. all printers
