Windows XP so slow to open Explorer or My computer

At our company, we have a mixed bag of workstations running platforms Windows 98se, NT4, and 2000pro.
All of the above have the latest Novell client installed (c3.32sp1 or c4.83sp1 respectively), and log in to several Novell servers, with several mapped drives. Our main server is a brand new Netware 6 cluster, which stores 90% of the data, and most drives map to volumes on this.
However, the last batch of new workstations we've bought have Windows XP, which all seem to take 30 seconds from launching explorer or My computer, to it actually appearing and being able to browse the drives.

Anybody any ideas??

Well open task manager and see if anything is eating your CPU.

It also depends on disk performance and how much ram you have installed.

Explorer likes sucking up CPU cycles do to the new multimedia extensions. Sometimes changing your default folder options to "classic" mode instead of "windows xp" will give you speed increases.

My other guess would be that explorer is trying to read a network disk you have mapped to a drive letter and having trouble.
