I have windows xp service pak 2 on my pc at home. The problem I am having is when it gets to the windows xp screen it is really really slow during the boot process to the desktop. I went to a computer guy that I know and he says I probably have a bad boot.ini file somewhere and I need to re-formatt my HDD to fix the boot issue. I was wondering if there is anyone out there who knows another way to fix it without having to wipe the HDD?

Anxiety is here to stay no matter how much you wish it away!

Stop...

1.) Check all Auto Start Programs... use MSCONFIG and uncheck not needed programs...

2.) Set the WIA Service (Windows Imaging Assistant) to MANUAL...

3.) Set your IP adress (TCP/IP Protocal under Advanced or EDIT) for the NIC (Network Interface Card) to a static (fixed) value, ie. common 192.168.x.x (where the x is any value between 1 and 256, I would use 192.168.1.10 for example) and a subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (no gateway unless you have a Router then you would enter the Routers IP as the Gateway adress)...

4.) do a complete scan for MALWARE, VIRUS, and AdWare in SAFEMODE... see the appropriate section here on the FORUM...
