Hi,

I have a windows XP home Edition. Right now I can't don the following. ( I don't know how it broke, probably some software or patch install/uninstall or some virus/ worm/ trozen I am not aware of. )

1) When I click add/Remove program or any of the itms (like add harware, user accounts, mail etc) in Control Panel, nothing happens.

2) When I right click on my desktop and click properties, nothing happens. That means I can't access display properties.

I have a lot of data 60 GB on disk and don't want to restore to factory condition. Rest of the windows working is OK.

My suggestion would be to use windows system restore function and restore windows to an early time that you remember things working correctly. system restore is found under the start menu, programs, accessories and system tools.

You have a virus.
Do the Trend Micro and Panda online Scans from smah's FAQ: faq608-3672

Do the steps described in faq608-4650

For both steps, hit the F8 key early and often, and select "Safe Mode with networking"

Be certain you follow the suggestions in faq608-4650 for disabling System Restore, stopping all IE or OE or Outlook Sessions, and have no P2P clients active, such as Kazaa.

Thank nspatch,

I thought about it but on my compaq presario 1368CL it only keeps restore points of the last 30 days. I didn't create any when it was working OK. and the restore points for the last 30 days won't do much good as it broke about 2 months back.

Thank bcastner,

I will try this in the evening and post again if it works.

I guess that's a lesson for everyone, if the system has a fault use the restore straight away.
I've done exactly the same as kumardeep and kicked myself for not using restore when I had the chance.

Guys,

In addition to the virus suggestion that Bcast makes, I've also seen pirated copies of Windows XP act like this -- which may in fact be because they may have been SHIPPED with a virus.

Not suggesting Kumardeep would buy pirated stuff, just pointing out that this is a known problem with so-called "warez" copies of XP.

My conclusion? I wouldnt want to have a pirated copy of Windows.

Thanks Everyone,

The micro virus scan did the trick and MY Notebook is clean now (Hopefully). Everything working right. It was an MSUPDATE.exe virus and couple others. Somehow the Norton 2003 that came with my laptop didnot detect any of this.

HemanSkeletor --I have the XP copy that came with my notebook purchase, but yes inapt versions of S/W or older data CDs can have virus.

Thanks Again
