Windows XP - Serial Card Installation

I've tried installing two different two-port serial cards from two different manufacturers into a Dell Dimension 5150 running Windows XP Professional. I go through the Add/Remove Hardware wizard and direct the OS to the appropriate drivers.

When I reboot I receive a blue screen with a "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" message. In Device Manager I see that the two serial ports are being assigned COM3 and COM4. The computer has no other serial ports. My next thought is to reinstall the card and assign the ports COM1 and COM2.

Suggestions?

Some hardware requires you to install the software before you install the card. Try removing the card, removing the com ports and any other reference to the card (software or other files) Install the software and then install the card. XP should automatically pick up new hardware. But above all read the instructions and follow them.

All though you may not have physical Serial ports installed, I have seen them many a time in the BIOS. Check this and diasble them if they are in there.
