Windows XP Security update KB896688 fails

I am unable to install the current windows XP "Cummulative Security Update for IE Windows XP MS05-052 (KB896688)... downloaded OK but when install attempted continue to have a "unable to be successfully installed" and no further info.

Have tried a number of settings lowering secuirty levels and closing third-party secuirty programs, etc but still no success. Microsoft have not replied to my inquires...

Any thoughts or assistance with this???

All other security patches and updates applied quite OK.

In the Windows folder there should be a KB896688.log which might hold some clues?

You cannot install some updates or programs
