could anyone tell me the search string to enter in the windows xp file search tab to search the full hdd for these file types

PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, HTM, HTML, BAK, RTF, TXT, PST files

i think it started like *.* HTML, etc

but can't get this to work

what i want to do is copy all the file i can retreive from an old pc to the new one and don't want to miss out on any of the users files

any help appreciated

You are close...

*.* will list ALL files...

*.pdf will list only PDF's, etc...

add a comma to separate the various file types you want:

*.pdf, *.html, *.doc etc...
