Hi,

After reading all the RPC related info here I have not seen anything relating to the error im having any insite on this would be great!

Here is a brief description of the setup
P 4 1.0 512 Ram 2 NIC Cards (Dlink/Realtek) Fresh install of XP Pro. Almost 10 min after startup RPC shutdown error. I am able to set the service to take no action to at least keep the machine alive. I try and connect my dsl to start the (40 something) XP updates. However my machine will not complete the dsl installation. (This connection works fine on other machines) I have elimated the modem the connection and the NIC cards as possible errors. Any ideas? Is it possible the worm infects the machine as soon as I try and register the dsl for connection? I also removed all partitions from the drive and have tried both Win 2000 and Win Xp with the same results. Im thinking at this point I have a hardware failure.

Do you have onboard lan ,if so try to disable it to see if it is having a conflict.I've had to this to my system also had to remove my modem ( motherboard issue )as long as I run it this way it's fine. run as few cards as you can to find out where your conflict is.

If the computer reboots before you can down load the fix, you can try Start - run - shutdown /-A. If this doesn't work, try the Symantec website for instructions on how to stop the RPC action (temperarally) and have time to repair and update every thing.

Update:
Thanks for your support. The Microsoft update was in fact the cause. I cannot believe how fast that virus can affect a machine. I was infected within 5 min of conecting my ADSL to the machine. I ran the updates installed a firewall, installed a new virus scanner. And still picked up 2 worms before all Xp updates were complete. All I can say is firewalls and antivirus software are as important as the operating system itself in todays IT world.

Thanks Again,
Simply Smith

"The Microsoft update was in fact the cause"

Well, no.

But I understand you point. Just after Christmas for a brand new machine I intended to image I left it connected to the internet without a firewall and was ifected with blaster within 12 minutes.
I wrote a thread here on the experience, and what to do with a new computer anymore: thread779-736873

Woops! Sorry about the error my previous post should have stated the Microsoft Patch was the "Fix" not the cause. But your right if you enable the firewall before connecting to the net you should be fine running the updates
