Hi,

Many Thanks in advance for any suggestions on this one...

I have a PC which is randomly rebooting. On reboot it seems to stick at the 'Welcome to Windows XP' screen!

I have removed the HDD and ran a full Spyware and AV check on it, all is well.

I have also copied in a new Kernel32 file to system32, again same result.

There is no pattern to the reboot, it goes at any stage of the startup but always sticks on the welcome screen. The problem (from what I'm told) started happening a while back and at one point you could be logged in surfing away and suddenly the system would reboot with a nice black screen staring at you!

Anyone got any suggestions on this one before I start ripping out hardware and finally doing a full software rebuild?

Many Thanks

Mike

I'd make a memtest floppy and check your RAM. If you've got a faulty module you can get random reboots when the PC attempts to access the bad portion of memory.

Try here:

There is a Safe Mode boot option in SP2 machines which turns off any Automatic Restart and stops at the BSOD.

Have you tried Safe Mode by itself? Can you look in the Event Viewer from Safe Mode, ignoring all the errors caused by being in Safe Mode and see what was happening earlier?

If Safe Mode boots you have these further options to try.

To get further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

If the error occurred after installing a device driver or application, try using Safe Mode and removing the driver or program.

To check conflicting software.

Try in Safe Mode to use System Restore to get back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

If Safe Mode is useless or unsuccessful try this.

To check your RAM.

To check your Hard Drive.

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to check your drive for problems.

You can also load the Recovery Console and run ChkDsk /r to check for problems.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
