windows xp pro - strange keyboard problem

i recently installed windows XP pro on my laptop. the problem is that after this installation i'm having problem typing with my keyboard. i'm having missed keys. if i type a word say 'there' it might be typed as 'thre', the character 'e' not being typed even though i pressed the key. i stumbled upon a strange solution: if i put windows in stand by and activate again, the keyboard starts working fine!! this proves that it's really not a problem with the keyboard itself but with the driver or something else. can anyone suggest a cause and an actual solution to this irritating problem?
