Hi

We have just purchased a Dell Server with Advanced Server 2003 installed. It has a Gigabit network card and is being used for the following operations.

DNS Server
File Server
Active Directory

All the desktops are running Windows XP Pro SP2. There is nothing special on the PC's just Office 2003.

When we were using the old server Windows NT 4.0 it was fine.

Since we upgraded opening Word files on the new server takes nearly 20 seconds and on 1 machine in specific he has to try to log on upto 10 times before it will let him on. Now if I remote onto the Server the files open almost straight away.

I have disable netbios over tcp/ip
I have set all the properties of the network cards to Full duplex 100
Netbios is disabled on the server

Does anyone have any ideas ?

Regards

Netbios has nothing to do with the issue, and you are likely better off with it enabled on server and workstation.

What you are describing is in the main a DNS issue: faq779-4017

There should not be an SMB or opportunistic locking issue as in the "old days."
