Hi,

Good Day. I am running Windows XP Pro. with SP1 and some Hot Fixes also, patch numbers are given below,

KB821557, KB823182, KB823559, KB823980, KB824105, KB824141, KB824146, KB825119, KB826936, KB828035, KB828741, KB838739, KB835732, KB837001, KB839643, KB839645, KB840315, KB840315, KB840374, KB841873, KB842773, Q 147222, Q 323255, Q 328310, Q 329048, Q 329115, Q 329170, Q 329390, Q 329441, Q 329834, Q 331953, Q 810565, Q 810577, Q 810833, Q 811493, Q 811630, Q 814033, Q 815021, Q 817287, Q 817606, Q 819696, Q 828026, Q 867801, KB870669, Q 823353, Q 832483.

I want to know, after installing these Hot Fixes, SP2 is still necessary for me or not, if it is, then can I proceed directly to the installation of SP2 from this point or I shall have to do some thing with already installed patches. I am so careful about SP2 because I don't have good past experience of installing SP2.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Regards,

Muhammad Tayyab

SP2 has all the patches ever sent out, so don't worry about missing some. The main problems with installing SP2 seem to be "trash" on the hard drive. The system must be clean of ALL spyware and virii. I prefer using the Microsoft issued CD over any type of download, one little glitch in the d/l can cause a problem. Also be sure to turn off "Boot Virus Protection" in BIOS setup. I do a "Ghost" image backup to be safe, but haven't had a problem yet. When you are done, go to Windows Update and check, there have been changes since SP2 has been issued.

Even with every patch ever issued, XP at the Service Pack 1 level is not anything close to the security and system enhancements of XP Service Pack 2.
A fully patched XP Service Pack 1 machine will still receive over 1,000 key system files replaced with Service Pack 2.

If you have a specific problem with Service Pack 2, report back here. It would be far better for you to resolve any problem than not to use the upgrade.

I have a problem with Windows XP Service Pack 2.
My VPN connection to work drops intermittently. I have ready that some users experience this, but I have not found a cure. I have tried modifying settings, reinstalling SP2 and installing a HOTFIX for SP 2, but I still get VPN drops after 1 minute, sometimes immediately, and sometimes after 5 minutes. HELP!

Thanks,

Leo ;-)

VPN client, be as specific as possible as to the version number and manufacturer.

Internet or dialup connection ISP, type, and the make of your network adapter card and the driver version level.

If you are using the inbuilt firewall try substituting it for a third party one and switching off the inbuilt XP firewall and see if that makes any difference.
