Windows XP monitor settings

I have a windows XP laptop that sits in a docking bay and is viewed over a flat panel monitor. When I take the laptop home and I come back to work and put it in the docking bay it wont view over the monitor. I have to open the laptop and change the settings on the graphic card to view from the monitor as its primary and the laptop as secondary.

I was just wondering if anyone here had run into anything like this.

yes I did recently when working on a laptop for a friend. Not sure that there is another option either.
