Hello,
Please can somebody help me, I am using Windows XP, IE 6 and in my IE internet options have no java VM installed. Everytime I view a website with applets it says I need to install java VM. Then it tells me I cannot auto install into XP. Great!, so I download j2re-1_4_1-beta-windows-i586 install this to no avail. It has options within it to use either IE or Netscape, so I choose IE as I am using that and it says "unable to install please check you have the rights to change IE settings." It's my bloody computer, who else has the rights!!?? I have wasted a lot of time trying to cure this and a friend has both XP + IE6 but doesn't get this problem. Please please can some one help????? Thank you kindly......Will Stuck

Windows XP has user priveleges. As a normal user, you do not have permission to install all types of software on the system. This is a standard security measure that every sensible system has used for years, but is relatively new to Microsoft products.

It seems that you will need to achieve an administrator login in order to install the JRE. I wish I could help you more with that, but I don't use Microsoft XP or many MS products at all. I would direct you to the Microsoft website and forums for help with this, since your issue is with Microsoft's products and not Java.

Thank you very much for your help! I am tending to see peoples point about MS ;) Never had much problem before but each time I upgrade I seem to get lots of fancy things and loose important things. I've been using computers for my whole life....goodness knows how a beginner would cope. Anyway....I havn't a clue how to get administrative rights...will have to look into it but thanks again for your help. Will.

Did you install XP yourself? If so then you set the Administative password during the install whether you realized it or not. Default admin login for Windows is Administrator. Now the big question is... can you remember what you set it to?

You can download quite a few utilities to hack the admin password if you want to forcefully break to your box. The url right now eludes me, I always just search for it when I need to. Search around on Google for a bit and I sure you will find something.
