I am having problems connecting to the internet when running windows xp for a user. Whenever I open up Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, I would always get a message saying the site can not be found (this is for google.com, yahoo.com, msn.com,....everything I could think of going to). When I go to safe mode, I can connect without a problem (except for windows update, I guess it doesn't like running in safe mode). FYI, I can ping and reach every other PC on the network when in standard mode. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is the machine patched and all updates applied ?
What about the XP firewall ?
What about IE security settings ?

The machine is patched up, with all updates applied, I turned the xp firewall off to see if I could connect, and the IE security settings are on medium

A couple of things to try:

A virus scan, to make sure you don't have some worm that's flooding the line.

Pinging an IP address outside your network. If you can't ping yahoo.com but you can ping whatever their IP address is, then you can look for a DNS problem.

I had a similar problem with a dialup machine - it had a worm that was trying to send out thousands of emails, and it couldn't connect to the DNS server through all the traffic.

I try not to let my ignorance prevent me from offering a strong opinion.
