Windows XP freezing every 2 seconds for half a second

I have a machine running Windows XP Professional SP1. About every 2.5
seconds the entire system locks up for about half a second. If you
move the mouse in a circle you can watch it freeze, come loose,
freeze, come loose, etc.

It's a Dell Latitude laptop with 512MB RAM and plenty of free HD
space, service tag GNL5J11. It's in a docking station but it freezes
both in and out of the dock.

This is what I've tried so far:

- Unplugging all peripherals (optical mouse, BlackBerry)
- BIOS is current
- Disabled Indexing service and some other unnecessary services
- Updated Video, Sound, Monitor, and Modem drivers
- Checked the Event Viewer for Application and System Errors, found
nothing out of the ordinary
- System Properties -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> changed
system cache to get more performance
- DirectX update
- Enabled boot logging (see end of post)
- Turned off Hardware Acceleration in Display Adapter properties
- Deleted *.pf in C:\windows\prefetch
- Ad-aware power scan (or whatever the deeper scan is called) and
Spybot S&D scan.
- Virus scan of course with Corporate Norton Antivirus.
- Disabled ALL startup items with Startup Control Panel
- Run RegScrub XP and fixed all problems

The freezing does NOT happen in Safe Mode. Also, when in regular mode,
if you hibernate and bring it back up the problem disappears. Is this
a driver problem? It starts to do this even before you log onto the
domain, at the password prompt. It seems like something is polling or
scanning or searching every 2.5 seconds and locking up the system. Any
ideas? Here's my boot log. Thanks.

What process is using the CPU? Check with Task Manager, Processes tab, click twice on CPU.

You could try My Computer/ Properties/ Advanced/ Settings/ Visual Effects, and select "Adjust for best performance", thereby turning off the many visual effects.

While your there have a look at the Paging File for any problems.

Check your RAM for any problems.


A second opinion for virus problems is also worthwhile.
