Have Maxtor 1TB storage device connected through fire wire. It is assigned drive letter "k" From time to time, xp windows loses the drive. I unplug the Maxtor device fire wire and plug back in. When system recognizes device, it assigns another drive letter. When I attempt to change the drive letter back to "k" via computer disk management under administrative tools, drive "k" is not among the available options. It is important to assign to drive "k" because I have a backup (dos) backup routine (uses xcopy) that runs each evening. The only way I can get back to drive "k" so far is to reboot, which is time consuming.

Is there anyway to recapture "k" without rebooting??

You could use diskpart to assign or remove volumes. You can even script it if you find repeatable results. Be very careful, a wrong diskpart command can do things that you won't like.
