I want to try something and wonder if anyone has tried it successfully.

I know that WinXp when installed on a partitioned drive will detect an installation of another OS and then boot to the Boot Manager at startup.

What I want to do is install XP on a different HDD attached to a Promise ATA 100 card and have it boot showing the Boot Manager. I realize that it must be the first Master drive but will it search the system and detect the other drive that is installed as the secondary Master with Win98 installed?

Win98 has to be on the boot/system drive which is C:. As long as the BIOS and/or Win98 can 'see' the other drive, you should be able to put WinXP on the other drive, or any other partition for that matter. That's a choice during setup, upgrade Win98 or install in separate drive/partition. The important boot files are written to C:\ and if they are lost or Win98 re-installed, you'll have boot issues to deal with. The 'menu' [boot.ini] is on C: and gives the boot list to choose from.

Thanks Berton!

XP installed just like I wanted and I now have a dual boot system. I will keep my fingers crossed that I don't crash 98! Guess that I could make a copy of the Boot.ini file and replace it if needed.
