Windows XP Add/Remove problem

Access Add/Remove program in Windows XP, nothing open. No error indicate. Please help

I am trying to understand your question. Is it that when you do a Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, you get a blank screen?

If so, your Plug and Play service has stopped running.

Start, Run, services.msc

Double click on the Plug and Play service and manually try to start it.

Report any eror numbers and error message text in detail back to the Forum.

I have tried to open Add/Remove program through Start/Settings/Control Panel. Nothing opens up.

You are the local Administrator on this computer, correct?
Are you in a Domain? Group Policy may block your use of this and other control panel objects.

It did try to run that file through RUN and \\Windows\system32. Nothing happens. I am local admin on machine. Nothing restrict from network. It just stops working from couple days.

You might want to investigate the status of C:\WINDOWS\system32\appwiz.cpl -- does it exist, is it Microsoft...

Mine is 537kb 8/4/2004 12:56AM file version 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) -- also found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache which should match.

Somebody might know if System File Checker (Command > SFC /?) will restore???

Yes, this file does exit in \\Windows\system32.

Have you tried registering that Applet from a Command Prompt or from Start Run?

Yes. I have tried to register that file and other file mshtml.dll and shdocvw.dll that found on other forums. Nothing help.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
