I posted this question a few months back in the Windows forum, and was told to come here after some discussion. Our network admin told me that this problem would be fixed when we upgrade our PDC to a newer OS (the current one is running Fedora 1!!), but I'm starting to doubt his sincerity (read the discussion, you'll understand).

So anyway, please look through this discussion and see if you can offer me any assistance. I'm really losing my mind, along with the patience most of the users I deal with.

Is the username map= setting configured in smb.conf and does the file contain the correct user information? What is the value of the security= setting in smb.conf?

The username map is set to /etc/samba/smbusers

That file only contains root and "nobody"

Security is set to "user"

The username mpa line also has a semicolon at the beginning of it...is that right?

The semicolon means that it's commented out. Try removing the semicolon and modify your /etc/samba/smbusers file to include your windows & samba usernames in the format:
samba_user = Windows_user

Note: This Windows_user is your windows username as shown at the windows logon screen. If there's a space in the Windows username, be sure to include quotation marks like:
smbuser = "First Last"

Then, if you keep your samba password set to the same thing as your windows password, you shouldn't even get prompted for credentials.
