I really need some help here(be prepared for extensive details).

My friend bought a laptop...DELL LATITUDE C610 PIII 1.2GHZ 512MB 20GB DVD MODEM ETHERNET 14.1" LCD FLOPPY DRIVE WIN 2000 REFURB WITH AC ADAPTER AND BATTERY

Worked fine - no problems for a month or so. Now, the problem as of Sunday was that windows 2000 would load, it got to the login screen, allowed username/password, and made windows start sound. Then, the taskbar would load, and sometimes the desktop icons (not usually). it would just freeze up. The mouse would be regular pointer, but if I went down to the taskbar it would be the hourglass. If I used ctrl+alt+del it would open the regular dialog box, but clicking anything would make it freeze with no function except mouse movement.

That was the other day - lol. Now, it won't even get to the login screen. This is for normal and safe mode, btw - nothing loads.

I can only get into DOS. By bypassing windows....I don't know what to do.

here's what I've tried:

I d/l the boot disks for windows 2000 from and tried the repair - the laptop doesn't have a windows 2000 CD ROM, so I can't reinstall (there's also no i386 folder on the machine's hard drive).

also, I have a win xp disk and attempted the setup from DOS...used winnt.exe in the i386 folder. Starts fine - says "checking hardware" then gets to "Please wait while setup copies files to your hard drive." And it stops....it stops reading the CD ROM(no noise or light) but it appears to be doing something on the hard drive (light flashes)....I let it sit for 2 hours and NOTHING happened. I'm not sure, but I don't think setup should sit there that long with no change/update/notice/etc.

Ok, now - I'm at a loss. I have no idea what to do.

I've had an explorer.exe problem before on my ME machine, and I changed the shell to winfile.exe and loaded it up that way to get in to do registry restore.....I would do that, but I can't get in to change the shell and I don't know how to change the shell on a windows 2000 machine. Also, the 2000 computer doesn't have winfile.exe - although I have copied it to a floppy and copied onto the machine, but it says "Cannot run from DOS".

I really hope someone can help...thanks in advance (hopefully).
