Is there actually anything on the hard disk and has it been formatted before?

If so, what file system have you used to format the drive? (FAT, FAT32 or NTFS).

If for some reason its NTFS, Windows 98 won't defrag it because it doesn't understand it.

Have you tried running it in safe mode?

Regards

I believe error 006 means that defrag could not access part of the drive.

Have you tried scandskw (scandisk) w/ surface testing?
Maybe it will be able to remedy the problem.
