Windows Vista's Access Violations While Accessing XP Box

I've search for days to find a solution to this. One of my clients has a Windows Vista Home Basic and she put some tax software on a windows xp share but while vista is trying to access it, it fails with a 'Access Violation' error.

I have checked the permissions on both machines and they both are correct. I'd love to fix this problem, well i'd love to remove vista completely from her machine.

Sharing permissions would be controlled by the XP host. Does the [vista] user account exist on the xp machine with the same password?
