So the more advanced graphics in Windows Vista will not be supported by the integrated video on some motherboards.

I am looking into building a system soon and am wondering whether it would be better to get a motherboard with integrated video powerful enough to support vista or just get a video card to go with any motherboard.

Also, can anyone recommend motherboards with strong enough integrated video .....or.... a motherboard and video card combo. I would like something that will be good enough for Adobe Photoshop / Macromedia Fireworks.

Thanks!

If you are buying hardware now... hoping that your video card will be compatible with Vista later... I would wait.

FWIW, I installed Vista Beta 2 two weeks ago and also installed ATI's Vista Beta drivers for my AIW 9800 Pro card. The drivers would not load at all (so no Aeroglass), and none of of the extra features and applications for the AIW would work. I ended up replacing Vista Beta with a backup from my old XP Pro drive.

I would wait until Vista is stable and video card vendors have stable drivers for it.

Nvidia's 6100/6150 Nforce4 derivative would be the most powerful "onboard" solution.
This chipset series is capable but as Vista is such a hungry beast I'm sure you would be better off with a seperate graphics card solution, something newer like nvidia's 6600/7600/6800/7800/7900 or ATI's X1600/1800/1900 series.

So assuming I am buying a computer tomorrow:

Would I be fine getting any motherboard now and then buying a video card when Vista is released? Will the most basic motherboard support a powerful enough video card or do I need to make sure it has certain specifications??

Thanks!

You want a motherboard that supports PCI Express. That will give you the ability to upgrade later to the newest cards.

As Johnthephoneguy says! as long as the new motherboard supports PCIe (as nearly all new motherboards do now) and that your chosen graphics card is of the new generation supporting the latest features that will be needed by vista and is reasonable powerful.
There shouldn't be any problems! lol well not that can't be patched/firmware and bios upgraded or driver rectified.
As we are all aware, there is know such thing as a glitche free O/S release, especially one that is so fundamentally changed from a previous version.

Does it matter what kind of PCI express slots the board has? Which is best? X16?

You will find almost all motherboards will have at least one 16X PCI-e slot for a graphics card, thats the one to use.

Does anyone think VGA versus DVI will make a notable difference for the new Vista graphics?
