I've written an interactive, javascripted quiz that seems to sometimes - but not always - cause Internet Explorer to crash on PCs. I'm thinking the crucial difference might be in the version of Windows that is running.

Could some of you PC users please help me test it?

The quiz is located at:

To test the site, just start IE, go to that page, click on "Start Quiz," and start typing in "Aster" as the correct answer to each question.

My experience so far has been that the quiz seems to make IE crash after giving two or three correct answers in a row. But some people, running Windows 2000, have reported that they completed the whole quiz without a crash.

So, if you can help me out here, please give the quiz a try and then report your results. I'd like to know..
- whether the quiz worked,
- what version of IE you used,
and
- what version of Windows you are using.

And thank you very, very much for your help!!

Yep ! It worked fine for me. I use Windows Millenium and IE5.5. No Problems at all

As per previous post, Win98 and IE5.5 crashes, but not at the same place every time.

I use Win2K SP2 and IE5.5 and did not have a problem. Is it crashing so far on only win98 machines? James Collins

I'm using IE6 build 2479 and Win98 Second Edition. All links worked fine for me.

I'm wondering whether it has to do with display drivers rather than Windows version. The Mshtml.dll file which is what crashes in my case, is responsible for image rendering in Internet Explorer, and it seems that older drivers are prone to this, although I've never had this trouble anyplace else.

Just a thought. :p

Hi Paulwood,

Yes, whenever I've seen the page crash the browser it has always given the message "IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module MSHTML.DLL"

So what does that mean? Is it something the script can check for before it starts? Or should I just give up on IE and tell visitors they need to use Netscape?

Erm, have you tried accessing the site with Navigator, I just tried with NN6.0 and got a jolly little message box suggesting the programmers strongly dislike Navigator 6. I assume the previous versions don't provoke the same response!

Anyway, it is only a limited number of instances that create the problem, and IE does have a large percentage of the browser market, and no, there is no way to check. There is something in the coding that is making it happen, it may be to do with screen redraws, assuming the pictures are standard jpegs, I guess it's somewhere in the Javascript, unfortunately. If I have time, I'll see if it's anything obvious.
