Every day a Windows 98 based PC running IE 6 displays a pop-up indicating that critical updates are available. A subsequent visit to the Windows Updates website indicates that an update for Internet Explorer is available, and references KB833989. Electing to download and install the update appears to function, and no error messages are displayed. But... Every day the same thing happens, and it's always the same update.

I have tried deleting the WUTEMP directory prior to visiting the Windows Update website. I have also tried manually downloading and installing the update via it's link from Knowledge Base article 833989. The WindowsUpdate.log file does not contain any error messages, and does indicate that the update installed successfully.

So why would this notice keep occurring !?

- James.

I appologise if this is not an appropriate thread for this forum.

Two approaches, as the first may not resolve the issue.

1. Use Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and remove the hotfix.

Then download the Hotfix from Windows Catalogue and not Windows Update and re-apply. See:
2. The error discussed in this newsgroup article is not identical to yours, but the solution to the problem being discussed applies to your issue as well, trust me:
