Windows Updates on a Cognos 8 v 8.3 server

I am not sure if this is the place to ask this question if not hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I have a windows 2003 server running Cognos 8.3 and apparently no updates have been applied to the server since it was implemented. Does anyone know of a best practice for securing the server without it affecting the Cognos 8 install?
