Windows Update problems XP

Hi
A few computers on my network running XP pro SP2 recently have had the following problems;

Windows installer does not work,
you can not use word as your email editor,
cannot see any network connections in network and dial up connections,
Search does not work.

When I remove SP2 and then add it again it seems to fix the problem

I feel that windows update;

Is causeing the problem has any one else had same problem or can offer some advice?

If it is causing you so much hassle you can always remove the patch, or even remove the Service Pack.
