I no longer get new driver detection notification in windows update. Is there something I may have disabled in "services" or some program I uninstalled (backweb)?

How old are your current drivers? Windows Update will only provide you with drivers that have been LOGO tested. Nowadays many manufacturers do not bother with LOGO testing and instead show you how to get round it in the instructions they give.

I had my system scanned by a third party driver company. Yea, I thought it detected a lot of drivers so I'd buy the product. I did... and it found several drivers outdated; ALi, VIA, and some standard microsoft operating system divers (USB, Generic USB Hub, etc). It directed me to windows update to download the drivers... none were detected. The whole reason I am doing this is because I am in a USB nightmare. I have refreshed the USB Device stack and now have no drivers for disk devices. I have 2 usb external drives. Windows update used to have an updated driver now and then. I don't remember a new one being detected for the past, I don't know, Year? The third party s/w company was able to scan and detect on my system, but windows update does not. Since I loaded SP2, I have Windows Update set to auto. Specific problem is the system detects a new device (external drive) and cannot find any driver. The drive manufacturer uses std MS drivers. (It did work at one time). So I think I have done something. I have Norton Internet Security Suite 2004. I have used this product for several years (upgraded).

I will give it a try tonight. EST - USA
I am concerned that the driver may be gone altogether, so there is nothing to detect. Again, I will give it a try and post a follow-up.

The second link contains the updated USB 2.0 drivers.
An sfc /Scannow should restore any missing drivers.

The first link is about updating drivers for each device. The problem is the system is calling my external drive and my flashdrive (which is plugged into a 4-port usb 2.0 hub which is plugged into the 5-port 2.0 PCI card I installed)device "24". The system finds no driver and doesn't install the device. I select the location for the device and select "storage device" and it finds no driver. This is why I believe I may have blown away or corrupted the drivers. I have no system disks (restore files in another partition)

The second link is a beta hotfix. I called MicroSoft and they sent me the fix. I also told them about Windows Update not finding new drivers. They assigned someone to the case and I have given them the windowsupdate.log and my system .nfo data as well as a screen dump of the drivers needing updating from drivershq.com

So I now have to external usb 2.0 HD's which one is giving me a cannot access - directory corrupt message and the other cannot be detected.

Any ideas will be appreciated. I will also post the resolution if I ever get one!

Thank you Mr B. I have done that several different ways in std mode and safe mode. I fear I have killed or corrupted something. Other parts of the article mentions updating the Bios firmware. I have never done that. I purchased my HP Pavilion 521n in 2002. There is nothing in the BIOs that lets you assign IRQ's to devices. Device manager shows no IRQ conflicts and one device was sharing an IRQ with something on the motherboard (somewhere I read these 2 devices could share).

I will see what MicroSoft has to say, then consider new BIOS firmware. Thanks for all of your recommendations.

UPDATE

My case was submitted as an issue with Windows Update not detecting old drivers. The response was:

Since the USB driver cannot be found in Windows XP, I believe it is a system issue. As a Windows Update Support Professional, I only specialize in Windows Update issues and cannot provide you with solutions to troubleshoot the system issue effectively.

I was advised to open another case. SO, I ordered System recovery disks for my computer from HP, and, at lunch, went out and bought a Bulkin USB 2.0 PCI Card. The one in the system now was manufactured by FMI (for CompUSA) with ALi drivers. I will replace it with the Bulkin and see what happens. I sure am learning a lot. Good thing I don't have anything else to do but go to work and sleep..

The different PCI card fixed all issues except 1. One of my ext harddrives (SimpleTech) thinks it is a system device, not a disk... and that is my fault. I will post a help request as a new post.
