Windows Update Net Framework 1.1 fails 2

Hi;
On an xpHome SP2 system, when I run Windows Update on net 1.1 frameworks it fails with 'application has generated an exception that could not be handled'.
This happened with sp1 as well (fwiw).
Your help is appreciated.

I would do a repair on the XP Home installation, then re run the setup for .Net 1.1

The last time I saw this I had to uninstall .Net framework, restart machine, then reinstall .Net framework from windows update before the 1.1 upgrade would go through.

Does Uninstall mean simply removing it via 'add-remove programs'?
Also, can it hurt any apps that rely on it?

I would go with gpalmer's idea, as it requires the least labor.
